Geneva Mello
Painting & Charcoal Drawings
My artwork draws inspiration from vintage discarded photographs. I find source images in antique stores, old family albums, and local history archives. The scenes are edited and altered to suggest dream and nostalgia, with compositions that allow for an open narrative. Rather than remain a discarded or forgotten photograph, the figures and their settings are transformed to explore gender roles, relationships, and power dynamics. Using pre-digital reference images as a starting point, I seek to create open narrative driven by memory activation. Working in a painterly style, I use drawing and paint media to create ambiguity, allowing marks and brushstrokes to form veils and layers to conceal and reveal different elements driving the narrative.
